Unlike all of the other pre demo-type outtakes of Mick Jagger - Keith Richards songs on Metamorphosis"Try a Little Harder" was never released in any version prior to the release of that album, by the Rolling Stones or any other artist. It wasn't strong enough to merit a release back in the mid-'60s and, apparently, it might not have been strong enough to be given away to another act to cover, though there were yet weaker early Jagger - Richards songs that did make it onto disc in that fashion.

It's built around a basic low twangy soul-rock guitar riff and backup harmony chant, showing a slight influence of the upbeat pop-soul of mid-'60s Motown, perhaps. The production, like the rest of the mid-'60s material on Metamorphosis except the cover of Chuck Berry 's "Don't Lie to Me"is very derivative of Phil Spectorwith the sturdy clap-along beat, rattling high percussion, honking saxes, and substantial echo. The main problem, not a unique one among early Jagger - Richards numbers, is that the song doesn't really go anywhere, with its repetitious verses urging us to try a little harder to get that girl.

Jun 06,  · The mid-'60s demos are unremarkable (with the exception of the Richards/Oldham composition 'I'd Much Rather Be With the Boys', a nifty little song even if it wasn't right for the Stones), but I'm giving "Metamorphosis" three and a half stars for the sweeping orchestral version of 'Out of Time' (far superior to the version on "Aftermath", in my humble opinion), Bill Wyman's mock-woeful /5().

  6. Unlike all of the other pre demo-type outtakes of Mick Jagger-Keith Richards songs on Metamorphosis, "Try a Little Harder" was never released in any version prior to the release of that album, by the Rolling Stones or any other artist. Like most of those Jagger-Richards songs, however, it was an inferior relic of their early stabs at mastering pop/rock songwriting.
